Craters, an active volcano, permanent snowfields and glaciers on Mount Rainier offer a stark contrast to the lush valleys, reefs and sandy beaches of the San Juan Islands. Wherever you set out to camp in Washington state, there is much to do and even more to see. The extremely rainy Seattle weather does extend to other parts of the state, so pack your rain gear or plan your trip for the serenely temperate summer months.

To the east of the mountains lies a barren mix of arid desserts and semiarid steppes, while western Washington is covered with dense forest, including the only temperate rainforests in the 48 contiguous states. Along the coast, Puget Sound is a functioning harbor and scenic centerpiece of many visits, with ferries to its numerous islands.

Pacific weather systems ensure cool, dry summers, but the "Pineapple Express," a wet system originating in the Hawaiian Tropics, brings intense moisture to the coast in the fall and winter. Western Washington is characterized by fog and pervasive cloud cover in addition to the rain, and the precipitation rates are higher in the mountains than in the lowlands. For any hiking or camping trip planned outside of the dry period from June-August, take these weather patterns into consideration.

Camping places in Washington state parks can be reserved through an online reservation system. Though drop-in visitors are accepted, many popular camping sites book up months in advance. The Cama Beach and Camano Island cabins and campsites at Forts Worden and Townsend cannot be reserved through the online reservation system.

Whether you are looking for a site that is rugged or more full service, there are several types of camping locations. Cabins, yurts and vacation homes are available for those in need of an enclosed or more private space, while campsites and "rustic structures" exist for the hardcore camping set.

Washington state has more glaciers than the other
47 contiguous states combined.

What do you remember about your last camping trip? Maybe it´s been years since you last took advantage of this great way to spend time with nature. Or is this a regular habit and you can’t wait to discover that new camping site? Either way, camping is one of the most satisfying ways to take a vacation. Pitching a comfy two-person tent or travelling in luxury in your new RV. Everyone has similar reasons for wanting to experience the outdoors. Today, this is the GREEN thing to do and while camping is evolving somewhat, the things that we all expect are sun, water, trees and fresh air. Those remind us of what´s important. Spend quality time with you family at a camp site you love. Take leisurely swims in the campground´s lake, toast marshmallows, and enjoy the smells of a small wood fire.
There’s never a shortage of fun things to do in Washington!
